Board of Directors’ Biographies

Dr. Ted Haas, President

Dr. Ted Haas practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for 35 years in Ottumwa before retiring in 2015. He has served on a number of boards including chairing the Board at Ottumwa Regional Health Center and the Finance Council at St. Mary of the Visitation.  Dr. Haas served many years as the volunteer Medical Director for the AHFA Maternal Child and Adolescent Health Program. In addition he served as the leadership spokesperson for the Teen Pregnancy Task Force, delivering teen pregnancy prevention education and messaging to local youth and their parents.  Dr. Haas served as the Dean of the Ottumwa Leadership Academy in 2015-2016. In addition to serving on the AHFA Board, Dr. Haas is currently a member of the Hy Noon Kiwanias serving youth in the community.

Blake Smith, President Elect

Blake A. Smith is a Financial Planner with Financial Partners, Inc. in Ottumwa, Iowa.   Blake earned an Associate of Arts Degree as well as Bachelor’s  Degrees in both Political Science and History.   Currently, Blake has active financial licensure including his Series 7, and Series 66 which allows discretionary authority in the architecture and management of client portfolio’s. Blake is currently enrolled at the College of Financial Planning completing his CFP designation.  As part of advising others on the financial planning process, Blake obtained Life, Accident, and Health Insurance Licenses, as well as an Iowa Real Estate License.

Ryan Mitchell, Vice President

Ryan Mitchell has been practicing law in Ottumwa for 16 years at the law firm of Orsborn, Milani, Mitchell, Goedken, Larson & Cox PC and has been a Partner since 2006.  In addition, Ryan serves as 8A Judicial District Representative on the Iowa Board of Governors, as well as served on Iowa Supreme Court Grievance Commission since 2016.   Ryan acts as the City Attorney for Eldon, Iowa, as well as the attorney for Ottumwa Water Works Board.  Ryan’s general practice includes family law, personal injury, estates, and criminal law.  Ryan has served as the YMCA Board President, as well as served on the Ottumwa Zoning Board of Adjustment.  He is also a member of the Rotary Ottumwa Board, and is Chair of the Rotary Ottumwa Chicken BBQ.  Ryan’s board service also includes the American Gothic Performing Arts Festival. Over the last two years Ryan has provided adoption services for 10 adoptions at National Adoption Day, as well as represents children and families in juvenile court and district court.

Amy Gardner, Secretary Treasurer 

Amy Gardner serves as the Case Coordinator for the Eighth Judicial District.   Amy earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. In her role Amy assists, advises, and represents the judge(s) in the execution of judicial duties in the operation of the court and coordinates activities of the court.  In addition, Amy manages the court’s docket and monitors all cases through initiation and all appropriate court settings until disposition. Amy assists the judge(s) in analyzing problem cases, as well as schedules all specially set hearings, pretrial conferences, and trials for the District.  Amy also assigns judicial support staff to judges.

Tim Schwartz

Tim was born and raised in Ottumwa, Iowa.  He graduated in 1980 from Ottumwa High School and attended Iowa State University for two years before returning to Ottumwa when his family purchased the Hotel Ottumwa. Tim has been involved in all aspects of the operation since 1982. Tim has served has the President of Ottumwa Progress Inc. and was active on the board for Court Hill Preservation Association and currently serves on the Wapello County Historical Society, in addition to his Board service to American Home Finding Association .  Tim has also been active in Main Street Ottumwa since being selected in 2006.

Wenk Podliska

Wenk Podliska is a Fifth Grade Teacher with the Ottumwa Community School District.  Wenk graduated from Buena Vista University with a Degree in Elementary Education and holds a coaching certificate.  In addition to teaching Wenk also coaches wrestling for the Ottumwa Middle School. Wenk is passionate about working with children and is committed to helping kids in and out of the classroom.

Stacy Moran

Stacy Moran is the Children’s Librarian with the Ottumwa School District.  Stacy has over 20 years of experience working with children. In her current role as an elementary teacher librarian she works with hundreds of students each day.   Stacy’s previous experience includes working as a youth counselor at American Home Finding Association. Stacy holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education as well as Psychology from Buena Vista University and Master’s Degree in Library Science from Southern Connecticut State University.

Tony Yencsik

Tony Yencsik is a Marketing and Sales Consultant with KIIC Radio.  Tony also provides private wedding design and house decorating for clients.  Before his career with the radio station, Tony owned and operated a very successful independent floral business in Ottumwa.  Before serving on the Board Tony was actively involved with AHFA fundraising for years. As a Board member, Tony donates countless hours to assisting the Agency with advertising and marketing, helps with special events, as well as provides special design assistance for fundraising events.  Tony is masterful in securing donations for special needs as they arise in the Agency and is always providing marketing for the Agency.

Peg Campbell

Peg Campbell has Degrees in Education and Guidance. She has worked at Indian Hills Comm. College in the Development Office and has had several guidance related positions in the Ottumwa School District.  She conducted trainings in recognizing and responding to depression in children, arranged trainings in recognizing and preventing bullying in schools, and was a liaison between the guidance offices and community resources. Peg also worked for years as the Director of the Foster Grandparent Program for American Home Finding Association. Peg has served on the Board of Directors for the Ottumwa School District and for the Great Prairie Area Education Agency.

Lisa Reece

Lisa earned a BS in Animal Science from Iowa State University in 2000 and moved back to the Ottumwa area.  Lisa worked over 10 years for Ajinomoto USA working in personnel and was Safety Supervisor for Ajinomoto Food Ingredients, LLC and Ajinomoto Heartland, LLC when she resigned to stay home and raise her family. Currently Lisa is a co-owner of Reece Funeral Home.  In addition she has held an Iowa Real Estate License since 2007 and continues to work with Al Martin Real Estate and Auction Co.

Carl Lewis

Carl Lewis graduated from William Penn University in 2015 with a Degree in Sociology, with an emphasis in criminology and a minor in Physical Education.  It was at William Penn that Carl met his wife and together they share five young children.  After graduating, Carl worked as a part-time youth care worker at American Home Finding as well as a full-time manufacturing job. Because of his excellent work performance, after a short time Carl was offered and accepted a full-time supervisory position at AHFA’s Foster Group Home Facility.  Carl is currently employed as an Integrated Health Home Care Coordinator with Southern Iowa Mental Iowa.

Claudia Gates

Claudia Gates is a Business Relationship Manager with U.S. Bank, in Ottumwa, Iowa. She started her banking career in 2002 with Hedrick Savings Bank. Claudia loves volunteering and giving back to her community. She currently serves on the executive committee of Main Street Ottumwa, where she serves as the Treasurer and chairs the Organization committee. She enjoys being able to volunteer and teach Business Entrepreneur classes at local schools through Junior Achievement. She also currently serves on the Business Leadership Network through the University of Iowa College of Public Health.
